TEHRAN, April 9 (IANS) A technical delegation from Saudi Arabia has arrived in Iran to assess the situation and discuss procedures for reopening the Saudi Embassy and Consulate General in the country.

The Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), quoting the Saudi Press Agency, stated that the visit comes in the wake of the agreements reached between the two countries in Beijing regarding the normalization of bilateral relations.

She added that the Saudi delegation will visit Tehran during the trip to discuss the mechanism for reopening the country’s embassy here, and assess the situation for reopening the Saudi Consulate General in the city of Mashhad, northeastern Iran.

She added that after their arrival, the team members met with Mehdi Honardoost, Director General of Ceremonies at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran, and thanked the ministry officials for their warm welcome and facilitation of the delegation’s visit.

China, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced on March 10 that the latter two had reached an agreement that includes an agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and missions within two months.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, at a meeting held in Beijing, Thursday, signed a joint statement, in which they announced the immediate resumption of diplomatic relations.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016 in response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran after the kingdom executed a Shiite cleric.
