Strong earthquake in Italy

Seismic tremors woke up many residents of northern Italy on Monday. There is no information about serious damage or injuries.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that an earthquake occurred in northern Italy this morning. The phenomenon was quite strong and had a magnitude of 5.1. According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), it could have been slightly weaker – with a magnitude of 4.8.

The tremors occurred shortly after 5 a.m. local time.

According to local media, the quake lasted about 30 seconds. It is initially reported that the epicenter of the phenomenon was in the commune of Marradi, approximately 40 kilometers from Bologna. It was felt most strongly in Florence, Forla, Faenza, San Lorenzo, Ravenna and Rimini. Tremors were also reported in Venice, Udine and Verona.

Media reported that the earthquake woke up many people. Terrified residents took to the streets in droves. However, there are no reports of injuries or serious damage.

– We are checking for any damage caused by the strong earthquake felt in many areas of Tuscany. There are no particularly critical situations at the moment. We will continue to inspect buildings, said regional president Eugenio Giani.

Several dozen minutes before this strong quake, the first, weaker shock was recorded about 30 kilometers from Florence. As time passed after the quake, aftershocks were felt in the area. However, local media reported that they were no longer strong and their magnitude ranged from 2 to 2.5. INGV is still collecting and analyzing data.
