Rapprochement with Saudi Arabia reflects positively on regional peace and stability: Iran

TEHRAN, April 11 (IANS) A spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia will have positive effects on peace, stability and security in the region.

Nasser Al-Kinani said, in his remarks at his first press conference in the current Iranian calendar year, on Monday, that the agreement brokered by Beijing between Iran and Saudi Arabia to normalize relations was met with “very positive reactions” in the region, and was welcomed at the international level, the agency reported. Xinhua News Agency (Xinhua) quoted a report by the official Iranian News Agency (IRNA).

Al-Kinani indicated that the agreement will certainly have positive effects on strengthening regional cooperation, in a way that enhances peace, stability and security in the region, as well as on strengthening trade and economic relations not only between Iran and Saudi Arabia but also with other countries in the region. .

Meanwhile, he said, Iran and Saudi Arabia will exchange ambassadors after reopening their diplomatic missions.

China, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced on March 10 that the latter two had reached an agreement that includes an agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and diplomatic missions within two months.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, at a meeting held in Beijing, Thursday, signed a joint statement announcing the immediate resumption of diplomatic relations.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016 in response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran after the kingdom executed a Shiite cleric.
