Punjab gives approval to build a shorter route to an airport near Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH, May 22 (IANS) The Punjab government has given initial approval to build a shorter, alternative route to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport from Chandigarh, officials said Monday.
The proposed routes will reduce the travel distance to about 3.5 km, reducing the time from 25 minutes to five minutes.
The Chandigarh administration is considering developing a shorter and alternative route to the airport as the existing single road is long and passengers have to travel 11.5 km to reach the airport from Chandigarh.
The alternative route has been prepared after consultation with all stakeholders – Government of Punjab, Ministry of Defence, Indian Air Force, Chandigarh International Airport Limited and Ministry of Railways, said an official statement.
The Government of Punjab has also given its approval for the acquisition of land within its jurisdiction, while the initial approvals have already been taken from other stakeholders.
The new route is planned to start from 200 meters before the T-point junction at Vikas Marg (coming from Sector 43 Bus Stand) and Purv Marg (coming from Tribune Chowk).
