Philippine Vice President Sarah Duterte resigns from the ruling party

MANILA, May 19 (IANS) Philippine Vice President Sarah Duterte on Friday resigned from her membership of Lacas Christian Muslim Democrats (LACAS-CMD), the ruling political party in the House of Representatives.
Sara Duterte, daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte who is party chair, did not say the reason for her “irrevocable” resignation, reports Xinhua news agency.
“I am here today because of the trust of the Filipino people… This cannot be poisoned by political toxicity or undermined by apocalyptic political force,” said Sara Duterte, without giving further details.
She added, “I am grateful to all members of the party for the support that has shown for once too that unity is possible to advance our shared dreams of our fellow Filipinos and our beloved country.”
Sara Duterte’s decision was made after former President and current Vice President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who is also Honorary Chairwoman of Lacas-CMD, was demoted from Vice Chair to Vice Chair of the House of Representatives.
Vice Speakers are the second highest-ranking officials in the House of Representatives.
There are nine Vice Presidents in the House of Representatives, including Arroyo.
