National Children’s Rights Day is a holiday established on the initiative of the Ombudsman for Children, Marek Michalak, by a resolution of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland on November 7, 2014. We celebrate it on November 20 and it is an excellent opportunity to remind children’s rights.

What is National Children’s Rights Day?

The National Children’s Rights Day was established by a resolution of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland on November 7, 2014. This is the day that commemorates the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most important document recalling the rights of the youngest. These rights are divided into: social, cultural, political and civil. They constitute an umbrella protecting the life, health and dignity of the youngest in the light of the law.

Who adopted the National Children’s Rights Day?

The initiative to establish the National Children’s Rights Day came from the Ombudsman for Children, Marek Michalak, who wanted to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the United Nations General Assembly.

“20 November 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This event is of particular importance for Poland as the initiator of activities and precursor of work on the creation of this most important document in the world protecting children’s rights. As Poles, we are proud of the fact that it was our country that presented the draft of the Convention in 1978 and proposed its adoption to the UN Human Rights Commission. It was undoubtedly one of the greatest Polish successes in the international arena. Recalling Poland’s special contribution and role in creating a global system for the protection of children’s rights, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland establishes November 20 as the National Children’s Rights Day,” the resolution reads.

How do we celebrate Children’s Rights Day?

On November 20, children’s rights are remembered on the occasion of the holiday. This is an excellent opportunity to make society aware that all children are equal before the law and have the right to privacy and respect for their identity. Adults should not only take care of children, but also create the best possible conditions for their development. The state can help them in this, but it should not do it for them.

On the occasion of Children’s Rights Day, schools and kindergartens organize classes to educate children about their rights. Educational institutions also organize various workshops and performances to raise awareness that children are equal under the law, have the right to health care, free education, cultural opportunities, rest and free time.
