Indian hockey team leaves for matches in Germany, Spain
BENGALURU, July 12 (IANS) India’s women’s hockey team departed for their European tour from Bengaluru on Wednesday.
The team will first travel to Germany for the three-match series that will see India take on host Germany in two matches, while they will also play China in one match.
The Indian team will start their campaign in Limburg, where they will face China on July 16, 2023. Next, the Indian team will face host Germany on July 18 and July 19 in Wiesbaden and Russelsheim respectively. The Indian team will take advantage of this tour to prepare for the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.
The Indian team will then travel to Terrassa, Spain on July 20 to participate in the Spanish Hockey Federation’s 100th Anniversary – International Tournament. They will open their campaign against hosts Spain on 25 July. South Africa will be next for the Indian team on July 27. And on July 28, the Indian team will play their last group match against England.
The team will be led by goalkeeper Savita while Deb Grace Eka has been named vice-captain. The Indian team was training at the National Training Camp at the SAI Center in Bengaluru.
Speaking before leaving the Indian team, Indian women’s hockey captain Savita said, “We are really looking forward to this tour. Playing against good teams in the run-up to the Asian Games will give us a good learning experience. These matches will be really important for us as we prepare for the Games.” The next Asian… Having worked on our strengths and weaknesses in the past few months, we will aim to give our best in Germany and Spain.”
Meanwhile, the vice-captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, Deep Grace Ekha, said, “We have had rigorous training sessions over the past few weeks. The preparations have been really good, and our previous performances will be a great confidence boost for the players. We will endeavor to repeat the same in our matches in Germany and Spain.” .
