Hanna Gucwińska, the long-time director of the Wrocław Zoo, is dead. The mayor of Wrocław, Jacek Sutryk, announced her death on Sunday evening. She was 91 years old.
Hanna Stefania Gucwińska, née Jurczak, was born on April 25, 1932 in Warsaw. She was a zootechnician by education, and she defended her master’s thesis at the Agricultural University of Wrocław. Since 1957, she has been associated with the Wrocław Zoo. In 1962, she married Antoni Gucwiński (died in 2021 – ed.), and together they held directorships at the Wrocław Zoo for many years.
She co-created “With a camera among animals”
From 1971, for over 30 years, the couple created the cult TV program “With a Camera Among Animals”, which was broadcast on Telewizja Wrocław. During the times of the Polish People’s Republic, Hanna Gucwińska sat on the Provincial National Council for four terms, and between 2001 and 2005 she was a member of the Sejm of the 4th term on behalf of SLD-UP.
