PHNOM PENH, May 22 (IANS) Cambodia’s anti-drug police arrested three local women for allegedly smuggling illegal drugs, and seized a total of 150 kg of drugs, an official said.

The three were arrested on Saturday during a raid in the capital, Phnom Penh, and the neighboring Kandal province.

“A total of 150 kilograms of banned drugs of four types as well as a vehicle were confiscated from the three suspected women,” Foreign Minister and Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sovic said on Sunday in a report released to the media.

He added that the police are currently searching for the masterminds and their accomplices, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Cambodia does not have a death sentence for a drug trafficker. Under its law, anyone found guilty of smuggling more than 80 grams of illegal drugs can be imprisoned for life.

According to the Drug Control Department of the Ministry of the Interior, Cambodia arrested 5,572 drug-related suspects, including 105 foreigners, from January to April of 2023, and seized a total of 361 kg of drugs.
