Earlier in the group stage, Sinner defeated Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, Serbian Novak Djokovic and Dane Holger Rune. Thanks to this, his performance in the Grandmasters Tournament is already the best in the history of Italian tennis.
Even before the tournament in the capital of Piedmont, the 22-year-old from South Tyrol set the country’s record for the number of matches won in one calendar year. The player currently ranked 4th in the world ranking improved the achievement of 54 season successes held by Corrado Barazzutti since 1978. This happened thanks to his victory over Russian Andrei Rublev in the ATP 500 semi-finals in Vienna.
On Sunday, the Italian will play in the season-ending match against Novak Djokovic. In the semi-final duel with Alcaraz, whom he had recently replaced as the leader in the ATP ranking, the Serb did not give his rival any chance. The tennis players spent only one hour and 30 minutes on the court. It was their fifth clash. The balance is favorable for the Serb: 3-2.
On Sunday, 36-year-old Djokovic will have a chance to win the masters tournament for the seventh time, something no one has ever done before. The world ranking leader currently shares the record of six triumphs with the Swiss Roger Federer, who has already retired.
