Allowing green farmhouses to ruin Goa’s wealth: TMC
PANAJI, MAY 23 (IANS) The Trinamool Congress in Goa has demanded the repeal of the proposed amendment to the ‘Building Development and Construction Regulations of Goa 2023’, stating that farmhouses in green areas will destroy the wealth of the state.
In a press conference on Tuesday, TMC national spokesman Trajano de Mello said this amendment is dangerous for the people of the state.
“It will destroy Goa’s biodiversity, ecosystem, environment and farmland. We don’t want another catastrophic incident, which will happen once the Mahdi River is diverted,” said de Mello.
He said that these modifications will affect climate change. If this amendment is passed, our traditional professional ground will be destroyed. Goa will be in trouble, and this has opened the door wide for the destruction of Goa.”
Dimelo alleged that the BJP government is trying to help the land investors, who are also not from Goa. “Today North Goa has become North India. This is done to help the crony capitalists.”
“The environmental portfolio and the town planning and the country have been given to two different people, so there are necessary checks and balances.” But here checks and balances have occurred… (to see) everybody get what they need. We request Prime Minister Pramod Sawant to intervene and rescind this proposed amendment.
D’Mello also requested clarifications from TCP and the Minister of the Environment on this issue. “There will be nothing left if the government goes ahead with these amendments, and therefore they must be rescinded,” he said.
“This is being done to cater to the demands of wealthy outsiders by building larger farmhouses through the alterations being made. The proposed alterations fail to serve the best interests of the people of Goa, and the TCP management must understand that the land can be used for purposes other than construction.” Goa opposes TMC strongly recommends the conversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural purposes, as this will lead to a significant reduction in the land available for agricultural activities, leading to the loss of important biodiversity and posing long-term environmental challenges.
