8 injured and dozens missing after massive landslide hit Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, April 18 (IANS) Eight people were injured and dozens are missing after a massive landslide hit the border district of Torkham in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, rescue sources said.
The accident occurred around 3:50 a.m. in the border area near Afghanistan, sources from the state-owned 1122 Rescue Corps told Xinhua.
The sources added, “It was a huge landslide, and part of a mountain collapsed when it was struck by lightning, trapping dozens of trucks that were waiting to cross the border.”
Earlier, Rescue 1122 said in a statement that several vehicles caught fire after the landslide, adding that three ambulances were dispatched to the site initially.
Given the scale of the accident, ambulances and firefighters were called from other parts of the province, the statement said.
The statement added that about 60 rescue workers are taking part in the operation, and all resources are being used to pull the trapped people out from under the rubble.
