290,000 cattle were killed by dust and snowstorms in Mongolia
ULAANBATOR, MAY 25 (IANS) More than 290,000 head of livestock have died in Mongolian provinces of Sukhbaatar and Khenti due to recent dust and snow storms, local media reported Thursday.
The official Xinhua News Agency quoted the authorities as saying that the total number of deaths is expected to increase because many livestock are still unaccounted for.
Severe snow and dust storms swept across Sukhbaatar and Khenti provinces late last week, causing massive damage.
A total of 127 people, mostly nomadic herders, were lost in the provinces due to the storms.
Of them, 125 were found alive, while two were killed.
Mongolia has a harsh continental climate where strong winds, dust storms and snow are common.
